Australian parent visas allow parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or
eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia either temporarily or permanently.
There are two main categories:

  • Contributory Parent Visas (subclasses 143 & 173):
    ◦ Faster processing times but require higher application costs.
    ◦ Subclass 143 grants permanent residency.
    ◦ Subclass 173 is temporary and can be converted to permanent via
    subclass 143.
  • Non-Contributory Parent Visas (subclasses 103 & 804):
    ◦ Lower costs but significantly longer processing times (up to 30 years).
    ◦ Subclass 103 is for parents applying offshore.
    ◦ Subclass 804 allows onshore applicants to remain in Australia on a
    bridging visa.
  • Aged Parent Visas (subclasses 884 & 864):
    ◦ For parents old enough to receive an Australian age pension.
    ◦ Subclass 864 is permanent; subclass 884 is temporary and can transition
    to permanent.
Applicants must meet the balance-of-family test (proving that at least half their
children live in Australia) and health/character requirements. Bridging visas may
apply for onshore applicants while their visa is processed.
