The Australian General Skilled Migration (GSM) program allows skilled workers
to live and work in Australia permanently or temporarily. It includes the following
visa subclasses:

  1. Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189):
    ◦ Permanent visa with no sponsorship required.
    ◦ Points-based and suited for skilled workers with occupations on the
    Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). 2. Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190):
    ◦ Permanent visa requiring nomination by an Australian state or territory.
    ◦ Applicants must have an occupation on the relevant state/territory
    skills list and meet nomination requirements.
  2. Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491):
    ◦ Temporary visa (5 years) for skilled workers sponsored by a state/
    territory or eligible relative in a designated regional area.
    ◦ Provides a pathway to permanent residency via the Subclass 191 visa
    after meeting work and residency requirements.
    All three visas are points-tested, and applicants must meet minimum points
    thresholds based on factors like age, skills, English proficiency, work experience, and
    education. Skills assessments and health/character checks are also mandatory.
